I LOVE to re-purpose leftovers. I always make too much food when I cook, with the intention of having leftovers. I find it more efficient use of my cooking time. But, I rarely heat up leftover the same way as I cooked them the first time. I find it way more fun to re-purpose the ingredients to make a brand new meal.
My local grocery store had a huge sale on flank steak last week, so I stocked up and cooked way more than we needed last night. I wanted to be able to thinly slice a few cups of leftovers to create a cheesesteak meal the following night. Also inspired by the beautiful braided techniques often exclusive to desserts, I wanted to attempt to apply this technique to pizza dough.
Well, not only did it work, but it was DELICIOUS and I cannot believe the stuffing actually stayed inside the braid!!! I'm feeling quite pleased that this first attempt turned out successful right out of the gate.

Cheesesteak Pizza Braid
3 cups of left over steak, thinly sliced and chopped
1 cup onions, carmelized
1 raw pizza dough (I bought mine in the bakery of my grocery store for less than $2)
2 TBSP room temperature cream cheese
1/2 pound sliced smoked provolone cheese
1 clove garlic mixed into 1/2 stick melted butter and 1 tsp Italian seasonings
Preheat oven to 450 degrees
1. Roll pizza dough out to 1/4" thick in an elongated oval shape. Place on parchment sheet.
2. Spread the cream cheese down the center 1/3 of the dough.
3. Mound the steak down the center 1/3 of the dough, over the cream cheese.
4. Evenly spread the provolone cheese over the steak.
5. On the side 1/3's of the dough, cut horizontally from end of filling to edge 1" apart. Do this on both sides.
6. Tuck the top piece of dough over the mound of filling. Wrap the strips on an angle, one side alternating with the other, at a slight angle, to look like a braid (see video for demonstration).
7. Spread garlic butter over top of pizza braid.
8. Transport pizza braid on parchment paper to cookie sheet and place in pre-heated oven.
9. Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
10. Let sit on counter at least 10 minutes before slicing.
