Irie Brioche Knit Slouchy Hat & Cowl Set Knitting Patterns

Brioche knitting in the round is an interesting technique. It has a lofty and interesting texture, and in 2 colors features beautiful vertical stripes even though you only use one color per round. After learning a few tips and tricks for this technique, you can make beautiful brioche projects in no time!

What you will need:
Hat:
Be So Brave Yarn; 100% American Merino Wool; 120 yards #4 medium worsted weight yarn;
(1) hank Everglades, color A
(1) hank Orangesicle, color B
US10 (6mm) 16″ circular knitting needles
Yarn needle
Scissors

Cowl:
Be So Brave Yarn; 100% American Merino Wool; 120 yards #4 medium worsted weight yarn;
(2) hank Everglades, color A
(2) hanks Orangesicle, color B
US10 (6mm) 16″ circular knitting needles
Yarn needle
Scissors

Gauge: 2.5 sts / 6 rows = 1″ after blocking

Finished size:
Hat: 24″ circumference x 9″ tall
Cowl: 9″ tall x 28″ circumference, after blocking

Special Stitches:
Bk2tog (brioche knit 2 together): knit next stitch together with next yo
Bp2tog (brioche purl 2 together): purl next stitch together with next yo
Sl1yo: slip one stitch as if to purl, bring yarn over right needle to back of work.

NOTES:
After working a round with yarn A, leave yarn at front of work.
After working a round with yarn B, leave yarn at back of work.
Don’t cross your threads when changing colors at the beginning of a round.
This project works best on an even number of stitches.

Instructions:

Hat:
With color A, CO 60 sts
Set Up Round: with color A, *Bring yarn to front of work, slip one as if to purl, bring yarn over right needle to back of work, k1. Rep from * around, move yarn A to front of work.

Leaving Yarn A hanging at front of work, continue working in Yarn B.

Round 2:  With Yarn B, *bk2tog (brioche knit 2 together with next st and next yo), Bring yarn to front of work, slip one as if to purl, bring yarn over right needle to back of work. Rep from * around, leave yarn B at back of work.

Round 3: With Yarn A, *bring yarn to front of work, slip one as if to purl, bring yarn over right needle to back of work, bp2tog (purl next stitch together with next yo). Rep from * around, leave yarn A in front of work.

Round 4: With Yarn B, *bk2tog (brioche knit 2 together with next st and next yo), Bring yarn to front of work, slip one as if to purl, bring yarn over right needle to back of work. Rep from * around, leave yarn B at back of work.

Rep rounds 3 – 4 until hat is 8″ long,

Next round: with yarn A, k3tog around. — 30 sts

Next round: k2tog around. — 15 sts

Next round: k2togx7, k1. — 8 sts

Cut yarn, leaving long tail. Thread tail through yarn needle and cinch through remaining stitches to fasten off all stitches.

Cowl:
With color A, CO 72 sts
Round 1: with color A, *Bring yarn to front of work, slip one as if to purl, bring yarn over right needle to back of work, k1. Rep from * around, move yarn A to front of work.

Leaving Yarn A hanging at front of work, continue working in Yarn B.

Round 1:  With Yarn B, *bk2tog (brioche knit 2 together with next st and next yo), Bring yarn to front of work, slip one as if to purl, bring yarn over right needle to back of work. Rep from * around, leave yarn B at back of work.

Round 2: With Yarn A, *bring yarn to front of work, slip one as if to purl, bring yarn over right needle to back of work, bp2tog (purl next stitch together with next yo). Rep from * around, leave yarn A in front of work.

Round 3: With Yarn B, *bk2tog (brioche knit 2 together with next st and next yo), Bring yarn to front of work, slip one as if to purl, bring yarn over right needle to back of work. Rep from * around, leave yarn B at back of work.

Rep rounds 2 – 3 until cowl is 9″ tall.

BO as follows: *k2tog,* k1, pass first st up and over 2nd st and off needles. k2tog, pass first st up and over 2nd st and off needles. Rep from * around. Fasten off.

    Hi Kristen, thanx for the free patterns. Nice guitar, it matches your hat and cowl set,or maybe the other way around. You are so talented! I have an arch top Takamine in a dark teal blue .I hope to start playing it again.
