Mardi Gras Gold Herringbone Cowl by Kristin Omdahl, from "Continuous Crochet", Interweave 2016
This versatile project can be worn in a number of ways—flat, tubular, twisted or partially closed—
thanks to the buttons! Choose beautiful jeweled buttons to give it a touch of sparkle. I love how the gold yarn and herringbone textured post stitches remind me of my old bling from the 1980s and ’90s.
I scoured the internet for vintage topaz buttons specifically for this project. I wanted a great story of some old Hollywood socialite whose treasured button collection was available for auction in an estate sale for the first time ever. Alas, I found nothing. EXCEPT, in a last ditch effort to find buttons before giving up and not adding them to this project, my local craft store had some remarkably beautiful, crystal buttons that still evoke the style I was going for in my mind's eye.
This is a one skein project featuring Kristin Omdahl Yarns Be So Bold in Pure Gold. It is 100% bamboo, handdyed, and comes in 325 yard 4oz hanks. You will also need a G/6 (4mm) crochet hook. The finished size is 25" circumference x 8.5" tall.
This beautiful stitch pattern is part of the post stitch family. They alternate right leaning and left leaning, reminding me of herringbone, one of my favorite textures! In gold, it certainly reminds me of herringbone necklaces. But it also reminds me of herringbone wood working, too. There is something about herringbone that just drives me wild! I'm especially pleased to translate this texture to crochet with yarn. It feels good to brush your fingers across the smooth ridges. And it is almost mesmerizing to follow the trail of leaning post stitches along the whole length of the fabric.
Please don't limit yourself to only the cowl! Make this first to get experience with the stitch pattern. But woudn't this be a gorgeous throw, too? Or even a rug? A beach bag? I think if you angled the leaning posts just right, it could be very figure flattering in a sweater design as well.
Please show me what you come up with!
