Luca’s Compass Rope Coasters | Free Sea Glass Journal Crochet Pattern by Kristin Omdahl
Rope that remembers a sailor’s hands. These coiled rope coasters are a love letter to Luca—born to a French mother and Spanish father, raised among the docks of Casablanca, and most at peace where salt clings to skin and charts curl at the edges. He works the Mediterranean and Atlantic routes on a wooden sailboat, trading what the seasons allow and keeping a battered compass rose close. In the summer of 1975, the winds carry him to Cypress Key, Florida. No spoilers—only the feeling of finding your heading again. Stitch a set, clip on the compass charm, and let the tide bring you home.
This is the first pattern officially released for The Sea Glass Journal, my debut novel launching Spring 2026.

Notes & Gauge
-
Gauge not critical; work until the coaster measures ~4–4.25″.
-
Keep increases even for a flat spiral; finish with BLO sc or crab stitch for a clean rim.
-
Add a tiny anchor loop at the edge (ch 6, sl st back) for a removable charm.
- Great stash buster project – can be made in any weight yarn – just continue in established increasing pattern.
Abbreviations (US)
Chain (ch), single crochet (sc), back loop only (blo), each (ea), slip stitch (slst), and repeat (rep).
