A cocoon shrug is a great introduction to making garments because the shaping is minimal. You begin with a flat rectangle, fold it in half lengthwise and add a collar and cuffs. I designed a coordinating knit and crochet version of this pattern. Make one, or make them both!

- 1090 (1308, 1570, 1883) yds or 996 (1196, 1435, 1722)m #4 worsted weight yarn
- K/10.5 (6.5mm) crochet hook

Rows 12 – 16: Rep rows 2 – 6.
Rep rows 7 – 16 for desired length.
Cocoon Shrug:
Set up row: FDC 98 (112, 126, 140) dcs
Rows 1 – 16: Rep rows 1 – 16 of stitch pattern.
Rep rows 7 – 16 until piece measures 32 (34, 36, 38) in long. Do not fasten off.
Collar:
Round 1: Ch3, 1dc in ea st across last row of body, fold fabric in half lengthwise to crochet along free loops of set up row, work 1dc in ea st across, join with slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 196 (224, 252, 280) dcs
Round 2: Ch2 (does not count as a st), *1fpdc around post of ea of next 2 sts, 1bpdc around post of ea of next 2 sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of first fpdc at beg of round to join.
Rounds 3 – 12: Rep round 2 (ten) times. Fasten off.
Sleeve Seams:
Sew sleeve seams leaving an opening 12 in (30cm) in circumference for armhole (per schematic on page 2).
Cuff:
Round 1: Join yarn with slst to any row end around armhole opening, ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in same row end st, *2dc in ea row end st around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join.
Round 2: Ch2 (does not count as a st), *1fpdc around post of ea of next 2 sts, 1bpdc around post of ea of next 2 sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of first fpdc at beg of round to join.
Rounds 3 – 8: Rep round 2 (six) times. Fasten off.
Finishing:
Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
