What you will need:
- 127 (140,154, 169,186) yds or 116.1 (128, 141, 154.5, 170)m #4 worsted weight yarn
- I/9 (5.5mm) tunisian crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Finished Sizes:
16 (18, 20, 22, 24) in or 40.6 (45.7, 50.8, 55.9, 61)cm circumference.
5.25 (6.5, 7.75, 9, 10.25) in or 13.3 (16.5, 19.7, 22.9, 26)cm tall.
Shown in size 20 in (50.8cm) circumference.
Gauge:
16 sts / 8 rows = 4 in (10cm) in shell stitch pattern, after blocking.

Stitches Used:
Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS), Slip Stitch Bind Off, Seaming
Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss): Foward Pass: Loop on hook counts as first st, skip first vertical bar, *insert hook under next vertical bar, yo, draw yarn through st; rep from * as required.
Standard Return Pass: Yo, draw yarn through 1 loop on hook, *yo, draw through 2 loops on hook. Rep from * across. — 1 loop rems and counts as first st of next row.
Tunisian Double Crochet (tdc): Forward Pass: Loop on hook counts as first st, skip first vertical bar, *yo, insert hook under next vertical bar, yo, draw yarn through st, yo, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook; rep from * as required.
Return Pass: Work as indicated in row.
Back Post tunisian simple stitch (bptss): Forward Pass: Loop on hook counts as first st, skip first vertical bar, *insert hook under next vertical bar from back side of work, yo, draw yarn through st; rep from * as required.

Return: Yo, draw through 1 loop on hook, *yo, draw through 2 loops on hook; rep from * across. — 1 loop remains and counts as first st of next row, 23 (28, 33, 38, 43) sts made.
Row 2: Forward: Skip 1st st, BPtdc in ea of next 6 sts, Tdc in ea of next 16 (21, 26, 31, 36) sts
Return: Yo, draw yarn through 1 loop, *ch2, yo, draw yarn through 6 loops on hook, ch2; rep from * 2 (3, 4, 5) more times, ch2, (yo, draw through 2 loops on hook) across. — 1 loop rems and counts as first st of next row. — 23 (28, 33, 38, 43) sts
Row 3: Forward: Skip 1st st, BPtss in ea of next 6 sts, insert hook in vertical bar of next st, draw up a loop, *(insert hook in next ch, draw up a loop)x2, insert hook in next vertical bar of cluster st and pull up a loop, (insert hook in next ch, draw up a loop)x2. Rep from * across, insert hook in vertical bar of last st, draw up a loop.
Return: Yo, draw through 1 loop on hook, *yo, draw through 2 loops on hook; rep from * across. — 1 loop remains and counts as first st of next row. — 23 (28, 33, 38, 43) sts
Rep rows 2 – 3 until 16 (18, 20, 22, 24) in or 40.6 (45.7, 50.8, 55.9, 61)cm from beg. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing side seam and cinching crown.
Assembly:
Sew side seam of hat. Weave tail through all ends of rows at top of hat and cinch to close crown. Thread yarn to inside of hat to weave in loose ends.
Finishing:
Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
