This is a light and lacy layering piece that is easy to crochet and has seamless join-as-you go construction. It can be worn open, cinched with a belt or with one side slung up over a shoulder. Lace up the sides with fringed ties to wear it as a vest or lace up the sides and front for a poncho look.

What you will need:

• 1000 (1350, 1700) yds or 914 (1234, 1554) m #2 sport weight yarn
• H/8 (5mm) crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Scissors

Best #2 Sport Weight Yarns to Knit and Crochet

Gauge:

2 shells are 3.25 in (8cm) wide and 8 rows are 6.25 in (16cm) tall

Finished Sizes:

39 (45.5, 52) in or 99 (115.5, 132) cm wide

25 (26.5, 28) in or 63.5 (67.3, 71.1)cm long from shoulder to bottom edge

Foundation Oval: *Ch4, tr in 4th ch from hook. Rep from * to desired length.

2 Treble Crochet Cluster (2tr-cl): *yarn over twice, insert hook into space indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice; rep from * once more in same space, yarn over and draw through last 3 loops on hook.

Instructions:

Note: Ruana is worked from the shoulder down the back. The fronts are then picked up from the shoulders and worked down individually. Ruana starts at the set-up rows for each shoulder. On the first row, the shoulders are connected with foundation ovals between the shells.

Back:

Shoulder set up row: *Ch4, tr in 4th ch from hook. Rep from * 10 (12, 14) more times. Fasten off. — 11 (13, 15) foundation ovals

Opposite shoulder set up row:

Repeat directions for set up row. Do not fasten off. Turn.

Row 1: Ch5, 2tr-cl in first foundation oval, *(2tr-cl, ch2, tr, ch2, 2tr-cl) in next foundation oval (shell made). Rep from * across. [Ch4, tr in 4th ch from hook] 3 times. Rep from * across other shoulder set-up row to last foundation oval: 2tr-cl, ch2, tr. Turn — 20 (24, 28) shells.

Row 2: Ch4 (counts as tr), tr in next ch2 sp, ch4, sc in sp between next 2 cluster sts, *ch4, tr in next ch2 sp, ch2, tr in next ch2 sp, ch4, sc in sp between next 2 cluster sts. Rep from * across to foundation ovals, sc in sp between prev shell and first foundation oval. [(Ch4, tr, ch 2, tr, ch4) in next foundation oval, sc between prev oval and next oval] rep twice more. Rep from * across next shoulder to last ch5 sp: ch4, 2tr in last ch5 sp. Turn. — 23 (27, 31) ch2 sps.

Row 3: Ch5, 2tr-cl in first st, *(2tr-cl, ch2, tr, ch2, 2tr-cl) in next ch2 sp. Rep from * across to last tr: 2tr-cl, ch2, tr in last tr. Turn.

Row 4: Ch4 (counts as tr), tr in next ch2 sp, ch4, sc in sp between next 2 cluster sts, *ch4, tr in next ch2 sp, ch2, tr in next ch2 sp, ch4, sc in sp between next 2 cluster sts. Rep from * across to last ch5 sp: ch4, 2tr in last ch5 sp. Turn.

Rows 5 – 32 (34, 36): Rep rows 3 – 4. Fasten off.

Right Front:

Row 1: Slst into first foundation oval on opposite side of back, ch5, 2tr-cl in same foundation oval, *(2tr-cl, ch2, tr, ch2, 2tr-cl) in next foundation oval. Rep from * to last foundation oval: 2tr-cl, ch2, tr. Turn. — 9 (11, 13) shells.

Row 2: Rep row 4 of back.

Rows 3 – 32 (34, 36): Rep rows 3 – 4 of back. Fasten off.

Left Front:

Row 1: Skip the middle 3 foundation ovals at neck, slst into next foundation oval, ch5, 2tr-cl in same foundation oval, *(2tr-cl, ch2, tr, ch2, 2tr-cl) in next foundation oval. Rep from * across to last foundation oval: 2tr-cl, ch2, tr. Turn. — 9 (11, 13) shells

Row 2: Rep row 4 of back.

Rows 3 – 32 (34, 36): Rep rows 3 – 4 of back. Fasten off.

Optional Fringed Ties Not Shown

(make 1, 2 or 3):

Tie:

Make a crochet chain 40 in (101.5cm) long. Fasten off.

Cut 8 pieces of yarn 4 in (10cm) long. Take 4 strands and fold in half. Insert crochet hook into last chain at end of crochet chain and pull the strands partially through, creating a loop. Pull ends through the loop (larks head knot made). Repeat for fringe on second end of chain.

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
