How to Make a Beachy Crochet Windchime FREE Pattern

I learned about feng shui recently and had the opportunity to have my house read by a friend who is very experienced at feng shui. One of the things he told me was that it was good energy to hang wind chimes in the bathrooms. I asked if I could make them, and he told me the energy was greater anytime the object was handmade. I have two bathrooms (my son’s and mine). I have yet to design mine, but decided to go with a beachy theme for his bathroom (as it is also the guest bathroom for visitors, too. I had the twine/rope in stash, the sea glass beads in stash, and I went beach combing specifically for small shells with naturally occurring holes to have on hand for a craft project (so technically in stash as well). The metal ring and the dried starfish were both purchased at a large craft store. Each one was under $2. My heart is so happy with this creation. I absolutely LOVE it. It took very little time to make, so I think it would make a WONDERFUL holiday gift, too.

What you will need:
(1) dried starfish (approx 6″ diameter)
(1) metal ring (approx 6″ diameter)
less than 30 yds worsted weight twine, rope or yarn
H/8 (5mm) crochet hook
approx 45 beads, with holes large enough to pass through worsted weight yarn or twine/rope
Shown with 23 small seashells with naturally occurring holes and 22 sea glass beads (12mm)
Yarn needle (thin enough to pass through the drilled holes of the starfish and the beads)
Thin screw for manually drilling holes into starfish

Finished size: 23″ tall x 8″ wide, 13″ fringe

Instructions:
1. Manually and very gently drill holes through the tips of the starfish with a thin screw. This is such a delicate item that it is very important that you drill slowly and gently.

2. Thread twine onto yarn needle and tie around the hole of one tip of the starfish along with the metal ring. *Wrap the yarn around the ring once more, then thread through the next tip of the starfish and the metal ring together. Rep from * until you reached around the entire starfish. Secure to first tip an fasten off.

3. Join twine with slst and crochet hook around ring. Ch1, work 21 scs in any section between starfish tips. *Skip next tip of starfish, work 21 scs around ring, before next tip. Rep from * around.  — 105 scs

4. *Slst in first sc, (ch7, skip 6 sts, slst in next sc)x3. Rep from * around. NOTE: there is a slst on either side of each starfish tip. — 15 ch7 sps

5. Ch13, slst in same sp. (this is for hanging the windchime)
Fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

5. Cut seven 28″ pieces of twine. Join them to the bottom center ch7 sps of the ring.

6. Thread 3 beads to each fringe, tying them to secure as you go (see photo), spacing them every 3″ or so. If you are using 2 or more styles of beads (like the sample shown) alternate the sequence. For example, I beaded seashell, sea glass, seashell on one fringe, then sea glass, seashell, sea glass on the next.

7. Tie extra knots to last beads on each fringe. Trim fringe to 1″ lengths.

Hang and enjoy!
