How to Easy Basic Beginner Knit Basketweave Hat Pattern in Rows OR Rounds Free Patterns plus Video Tutorial by Kristin Omdahl

Knitting a knit basketweave hat pattern  is such a simple and fun way to expand your knitting skills from garter and stockinette! If you can knit and purl, you can make this beautiful stitch pattern.

Follow along and learn how to turn this beautiful stitch pattern into a simple hat in rows or rounds – or make them both ways!

What you will need:

  • 140 yds #4, medium worsted weight yarn
  • US8 (5mm) knitting needles
    NOTE: 16″ circular knitting needles work best for knitting the hat in the round. For knitting the hat in rows, you can use any size circulars or straight knitting needles.
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge: 3 sts / 4 rows = 1″ in blocked basketweave stitch pattern

Finished size: 20″ circumference x 9″ tall

Instructions:
HAT IN ROWS:
CO 60 sts

Row 1: *k3, p3. Rep from * across. — 60 sts

Rows 2 – 4: rep row 1

Row 5: *p3, k3. Rep from * across. — 60 sts

Rows 6 – 8: rep row 5

Rows 9 – 40: Rep rows 1 – 8 four more times.

CROWN:
Row 41: k3tog across. — 20 sts

Row 42: purl around. — 20 sts

Row 43: k2tog across. — 10 sts

Assembly:
Cut yarn leaving 18″ long tail. Thread tail onto yarn needle and slide all 10 sts off knitting needle and through yarn needle. Cinch closed. Secure with a knot. Sew side edges of hat together. Weave in loose ends.

Hand wash, block to finished measurements and let dry.

Instructions:
HAT IN ROUNDS:
CO 60 sts

Round 1: Place marker, join in round being careful to not twist stitches. *k3, p3. Rep from * around.

Round 2: Slip marker, *k3, p3. Rep from * around. — 60 sts

Rounds 3 – 4: rep round 2

Round 5: Slip marker, *p3, k3. Rep from * around. — 60 sts

Rounds 6 – 8: rep round 5.

Rounds 9 – 40: Rep rounds 1 – 8 four more times.

CROWN:
Round 41: k3tog around. — 20 sts

Round 42: knit around. — 20 sts

Round 43: k2tog around; — 10 sts

Assembly:

Cut yarn leaving 18″ long tail. Thread tail onto yarn needle and slide all 10 sts off knitting needle and through yarn needle. Cinch closed. Secure with a knot. Sew side edges of hat together. Weave in loose ends.
