Bare Organic Classic Market Bag FREE Crochet Pattern

The classic market bag – seamless, in the round, and durable. The addition of slipped stitches around the top edge and straps ensures sturdy and long lasting durability. The decorative picots in the classic mesh pattern adds a touch of romantic whimsy to this otherwise super functional and environmentally responsible project. This pattern is quick and easy to make – perfect for last minute gifts Make a bunch of them and keep them in your car for eco-friendly shopping every day of the week!

What you will need:
1 ball Be So Bare Yarn; 100% organic, completely USA made cotton; 315 yards per 4oz hank; #2 sport weight; undyed.
or
2 balls Be So Baby Yarn; 100% milk (casein) fiber; 142 yds (130m) per 1.75 oz (50g) ball. Available in 28 colors!
G/6 (4mm) crochet hook

Gauge: 4st/2 rows = 4″ in double crochet, but gauge is not critical for this project

Finished size: 15″ wide x 17″ tall, 9″ handle drop (UNSTRETCHED)
NOTE: the nature of this mesh fabric has a lot of stretch to it. You will be amazed at how much you could fit into this bag!

Instructions:

BASE:
Ch4, slst to 4th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: ch3 (counts as dc), work 11 additional dc in ring. Slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 12 dcs

Round 2: ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 2dc in ea st around. Slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 24 dcs

Round 3: ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 1dc in next st. *2dc in next st, 1dc in next st. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 36 dcs

Round 4: ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 2 sts. *2dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 2 next sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 48 dcs

Round 5: ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 3 sts. *2dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 3 next sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 60 dcs

NOTE: For smaller bag in video, base ends after round 5. Continue on to sides section.

Round 6: ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 4 sts. *2dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 4 next sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 72 dcs

Round 7: ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 5 sts. *2dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 5 next sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 84 dcs

Round 8: ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 6 sts. *2dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 6 next sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 96 dcs

SIDES:

Round 9: ch1, sc in first st, ch3, sc in same st, ch5, skip 3 sts, *(sc, ch3, sc) in next st, ch5, skip 3 sts. Rep from * around, replace last ch5 with ch2, dc in first sc at beg of round to join. — 24 ch5 sps
NOTE: (ch2, dc) replace last ch5 sp and positions you at the center of the ch5 sp to beg the next round.
NOTE: stitch count for smaller bag in video is 15 ch5 sps after end of first round of sides.

Round 10: ch1, (sc, ch3, sc) in same ch5 sp, ch5, *(sc, ch3, sc) in next ch5 sp, ch5. Rep from * around, replace last ch5 with ch2, dc in first sc at beg of round to join. — 24 ch5 sps

Rounds 11 – 36: rep row 10
NOTE: for smaller bag in video, follow same repeat for a total of 20 side rounds.

Round 37: ch1, sc in same ch5 sp, ch5, *sc in next ch5 sp, ch5. Rep from * around, replace last ch5 sp with ch2, dc in first sc at beg of round to join. – 24 ch5 sps
NOTE: for smaller bag in video, stitch count is 15 ch5 sps

Round 38: Ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same ch5 sp, *4dc in next ch5 sp. Rep from * around, 2 additional dcs in first ch5 sp at beg of round, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 96 dcs
NOTE: For smaller bag in video, stitch count is 60 dcs

Rounds 39 – 40: ch3 (counts as dc), work 1dc in ea st around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 96 dcs

STRAPS:

The numbers before parenthesis are for the smaller bag in video, and the numbers inside the parenthesis are for the larger bag.

Round 41: ch1, *1sc in ea of next 15 (24) sts, slst in ea of next 15 (24) sts. Rep from * once more, slst to first sc at beg of round to join. — 30 (48) scs, 30 (48) slsts

Round 42: ch1, *1sc in ea of next 15 (24) sts, ch 45 (72), skip 15 (24) slsts. Rep from * once more, slst to first sc at beg of round to join. — 30 (48) scs, 90 (144) chs

Round 43: ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ea of next 23 sts, 1dc in ea of next 72 chs, 1dc in ea of next 24 sts, 1dc in ea of next 72 chs. Slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 120 (192) dcs

Round 44: ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ea dc around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 120 (192) dcs

Round 45: slst in ea st around. Fasten off.

Weave in loose ends. Wash, block to finished measurements and let dry.

    Thanks Kristen I just finished my small market bag. Just wanted to mention I had to adjust the bottom rows to get the right stitch count. Don’t know if it’s an error but it didn’t work for me the way it was written. Thanks again for the pattern. I enjoy your video tutorials as well.
