Fine Trixie TIDBIT Crochet Shawl Free Pattern

This is a sectacular use of colorwork and lace in a crochet shawl. In one color, you can make this gorgeous shawl with one ball of Be So Fine Yarn, or use a TRIO of TIDBITS to make it in three colors for extra fun! This top down construction moves quickly with X-stitches and the shawl is fringed with beautiful motifs.

What you will need:

1 ball of Be So Fine Yarn
or
3 TIDBITS of Be So Fine Yarn
shown in Sun Kissed Yellow, Caribbean Turquoise and Passionate Plum
G/6 (4mm) crochet hook

Skill: Intermediate

Gauge: gauge is not critical for this project, but each motif’s diameter is 5” after blocking

Finished size: 68” wide x 25” long after blocking

NOTE: All X-sts use a multiple of 5 stitches on the previous row. Corner X-sts share the same st location as thelower left leg of the previous X-st and lower right leg of the next  X-st. Beginning X-sts areworked in the first st, of the row and share that st with the right leg of the next X-st. End X-st is worked in the last st of the row and share that st with the left leg of the previous X-st.

SPECIAL STITCHES:

Beginning X-stitch (beg X-st): Ch 4 (counts as tr; this is lower right leg of X-st), yo twice, insert hook in same st and pull up a loop. [Yo, pull through 2 loops] twice (lower left leg of X-st). Ch 7 (counts as tr, ch 3; upper right leg of X-st), yo twice, insert hook into top horizontal thread of both lower legs of X and pull up a loop. [Yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times (upper left leg of X-st).

X-Stitch (X-st): Yo 4 times, insert hook in next st and pull up a loop. [Yo, pull through 2 loops] twice (lower right leg of X-st; there are still 3 loops on hook). Skip next 3 sts, yo twice, insert hook in next stitch and pull up a loop. [Yo, pull through 2 loops] twice (lower left leg of X-st; there are 3 loops on hook). [Yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times (upper right leg of X-st). Ch 3, yo twice, insert hook through top horizontal thread of both lower tr legs of X and pull up a loop. [Yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times (upper left leg of X-st).

Corner X-Stitch (corner X-st): Yo 4 times, insert hook in same st as last lower leg of pre X-st, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice (there are 3 loops on hook). Yo twice, insert hook in next st and pull up a loop. [Yo, pull through 2 loops] twice (there are 3 loops on hook). [Yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times. Ch 3, yo twice, insert hook through top horizontal thread of both lower tr legs of X and pull up a loop. [Yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times.

End X-Stitch (End X-st): Yo 4 times, insert hook in same st as last lower leg of prev X-st, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice (there are 3 loops on hook). Yo twice, insert hook in same st and pull up a loop. [Yo, pull through 2 loops] twice (there are 3 loops on hook). [Yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times. Ch 3, yo twice, insert hook through top horizontal thread of both lower tr legs of X and pull up a loop. [Yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times.

INSTRUCTIONS:

SHAWL:

Row 1: FSC 35 sts

Row 2: Beg-X-st in first st, *3 X-sts (starting first X-st in same st as last X-st), corner X-st (place marker in top left leg of X-st), X-st, corner X-st, 3 X-sts, End X-st in last sc, turn. — 11 X-sts. Move marker up as work progresses.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, *3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in ea of next 2 sts. Rep from * across to last ch-3 sp, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in 4th ch of turning ch, turn. — 55 scs.

Row 4: Beg-X-st in first st, *X-st (starting first X-st in same st as last X-st), work X-sts across to next marked st, corner X-st, X-st, corner X-st, work X-sts across, End X-st in last sc, turn. — 15 X-sts.

Rows 5 – 25: Rep Rows 3 – 4 (10 times). — 51 X-sts at end of last row; then rep Row 3 once more. — 255 sc. Fasten off.

Motif Edging (make 19):

NOTE: motifs are joined on one point to the shawl (to the center of every 3rd repeat of X sts on last row of shawl), and on two points to the adjacent motif.

First motif:

Round 1: Ch5, slst to 5th ch from hook to join. ch7 (counts as tr, ch3), (tr, ch3)x5 in ring, slst to 4th of beg ch to join. — 6 ch3 sps

Round 2: slst into first ch3 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), 3dc in same sp, (ch5, 4dc in next ch3 sp)x5, 4dc in next ch3 sp, ch2, dc to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 6 ch5 sps

NOTE: (ch2, dc) in last round counts as last ch5 sp.

Round 3: ch4 (counts as dc, ch1), dc, ch1, dc in same sp, *ch2, skip 2 dcs on pre round, sc in sp before next dc, ch2, (dc, ch1, dc, ch1, dc, ch3, dc, ch1, dc, ch1, dc) in next ch5 sp. Rep from * around, ch2, skip 2 dcs on prev round, sc in sp before next dc, ch2, (dc, ch1, dc, ch1, dc) in last ch5 sp, ch3, slst to 3rd of beg ch to join. Fasten off.

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and let dry.
