These six tips are just a few ways that keeping a journal can improve your creative abilities. Regular practice is the most important component, and keeping a journal is a great way to ensure that practice happens. Make creativity a habit instead of a talent.

1: Empty Your Head

“Keep in mind that ideas are generally fleeting and must be captured as they arise.” ~ Bill West, The Imagineering Workout

Jotting Down your ideas in any form (sketch, outline, phrases, concept(s) allows you to make room for more ideas and/or expand on the recorded ideas.

2. Freeform Thinking

“The best way to become a producer is to sit down every day and create. If you do that enough, you’ll consistently open yourself up to creating awe-inspiring work.” –Blake Powell

Quieting your environment and focusing on the process allows your brain to freely flow ideas. No rules, no structure, just allow the ideas to flow. And the more you do it, the more you get out of it.

3. Unlimited Resources

Just (make) something. It might be something crummy or awkward or not ready for prime time. If you make something, you are creative.” – Sonia Simone

You can’t run out of ideas. That is the beauty of creativity. The more you allow yourself to create, the more creativity grows inside of you!

4. Rest & Reboot

“The brain is like a muscle — sometimes it needs to be relaxed.” –lazyguru

Creative thinking is hard work! The best thinkers know when to work and when to take a break. Travel, even if it is only to the next town, and write a travelogue. Pick up a new hobby, or meditate.

5. Goals, Plans & Ambitions

You are 42% more likely to achieve your goals when you write them down.

Regular journaling develops a creative habit. But it is the addition of goals, intentions and reflection that really transform your efforts into a powerful tool.

It is a wonderful and safe place to share your photos of finished projects in my knitting or crochet patterns or yarns, and to see what others are making, too.
  • I have recently added a wonderful new interactive section to the website which I invite you to take part in, it has been a smashing success and such fun so far. It is the new “Share Your Project” section. You, my creators, can upload images and descriptions of your creations to share with the ever growing community! To upload simply click here.
