Stitch Multiple & Sizing Help

This stitch pattern is worked over a multiple of 8 + 2 stitches.
To calculate your starting chain:
(8 × number of pattern repeats) + 2 = total starting chains

Below are suggested starting chains for common project types in different yarn weights, based on average gauge estimates. Always crochet a small swatch first to match your desired width and drape, and adjust as needed.

Project Type Fingering (7 sts/in) Sport (6 sts/in) DK (5.5 sts/in) Worsted (5 sts/in) Bulky (4 sts/in)
Scarf (8″ wide) 58 ch (7 reps) 50 ch (6 reps) 46 ch (5.5 reps) 42 ch (5 reps) 34 ch (4 reps)
Shawl (60″ wide) 422 ch (52 reps) 386 ch (48 reps) 338 ch (42 reps) 322 ch (40 reps) 258 ch (32 reps)
Baby Blanket (28″) 210 ch (26 reps) 178 ch (22 reps) 146 ch (18 reps) 130 ch (16 reps) 114 ch (14 reps)
Throw (45″ wide) 338 ch (42 reps) 306 ch (38 reps) 274 ch (34 reps) 258 ch (32 reps) 210 ch (26 reps)

How to Use This Table:

  • Each value is a suggested starting chain using the (8 × repeats) + 2 formula.

  • These estimates are based on average gauges and may vary depending on your tension and the yarn/hook combination you use.

  • Always swatch! Adjust your starting chain to fit your exact needs after measuring your stitches per inch.
