Hexagon Formula Pattern to Make any Hexagon Shaped Project

You could make this as small or as large as you want by choosing yarn thickness and how many rounds you want it to be. It could be a tiny hexagon-shaped earring with fingering or sport weight yarn; or with more rounds in thin yarn it could also be a beautiful shawl. Use a #3, 4 or 5 weight yarn and make it any sized afghan from a baby blanket through a kind-sized bed coverlet or even a rug! You can make this any size you like! Use this pattern to make many different types of projects!

What you will need to make this hexagon formula crochet pattern:

  • Use any yarn and appropriately sized crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Shown in:

Wool Ease by Lion Brand Yarn; 20% wool / 80% acrylic; color Rose Heather, and an H/8 (5mm) crochet hook.

Use the yarn estimate guide on page 3 to determine the amount of yarn you will need to make this shawl in a similar size with various weights of yarn.

Gauge:

Gauge is not critical for this project.

Here are some suggested size recommendations for top down shawls:

Suggested Shawl sizes:

Kerchief: 36 in (91cm) wide x 18 in (46cm) long

Shawlette: 24 in (61cm) – 30 in (76cm) wide x 48 in (122cm) to 60 in (152cm) wide

Full sized shawl: 36 in (91cm) – 40 in (102cm) long x 72 in (183cm) to 80 in (203cm) wide

Stitch Guide:

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), and slip stitch.

Pattern notes:

Weave in loose ends as work progresses

Turn work at the end of each row.

Instructions to make hexagon formula crochet pattern:

Ch5, slst to first ch to form ring.

Round 1: Ch2, 9dc in ring. Slst to first st at beg of round to join. — 9 dcs

Round 2: Ch2, 2dc in ea st around, slst to top of first dc at beg of round to join. — 18 dcs

Round 3: Ch2, *1dc in next st, 5dc in next st, 1dc in next st. Rep from * around, slst to first st at beg of round to join. — 42 sts

Round 4: Ch2, *1dc in ea of next 3 sts, 5dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 3 sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. — 66 sts

Round 5: Ch2, *1dc in ea of next 5 sts, 5dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 5 sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. — 90 sts

Continue in established pattern for desired size. Fasten off.

Note: Each additional round increases the stitch count by 24 sts.

Note: When using a ch2 at the beginning of the row, it does not count as a stitch. But, you may replace it with a ch3 and then it counts as a stitch.

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
