How to Crochet a Simple, 3-Dimensional Flower Free Pattern by Kristin Omdahl

This is one of my very favorite techniques for designing flowers. I’ve used it several times, in various books and patterns. I’ve used it in baby booties, hats, blankets, bags, and motifs. But today I’m going to show you how to make the flower all by itself. Why? Well, why not? As a stand alone flower, you can learn the technique. Also, you can use it as embellishment. Attach it to a headband, a purse, a scarf, make it a button, or even a shawl pin! I’m going to attach it to an ivy wall in my backyard for garden decoration. The sky is the limit with embellishments!!

For this technique, you will need a crochet hook and appropriately sized yarn.

Instructions:

Round 1: Ch5, slst to 5th ch from hook to form ring. *ch3, dc in ring, ch3, slst in ring. Rep from * 5 more times. — 6 petals
Round 2: *Ch4 (working behind petal and skipping those sts, slst in next slst. Rep from * around. — 6 ch4 sps
Round 3: slst into first ch4 sp, ch3, 3dc in ch5 sp, ch3, slst in ch4 sp, (slst, ch3, 3dc, ch3, slst) in ea of next five ch4 sps. — 6 petals

Fasten off. Leaving tail long for sewing flower to desired surface. Or weave in ends.
