How to Make Brave Primrose Messy Bun Hat Crochet Pattern

How to Make Brave Primrose Messy Bun Hat Crochet Pattern

by Kristin Omdahl

As a woman who wears her hair long, I can totally appreciate the messy bun hat movement! This is a wonderful way to accessories a messy bun or ponytail hairstyle and looking super cute in a hat at the same time!

I like making them from the top down, working the first round of stitches around a pony tail holder. This has a ton of stretch, and holds its shape very nicely, too.

If you prefer a hat without the hole – that is a simple modification, too! Start with a circular medallion and increase to the number of stitches of the first round of a messy bun hat and continue as instructed.

What you will need:
120 yards worsted weight yarn
1 ball Be So Brave Yarn; 100% American Merino Wool, #4 medium, worsted weight yarn; 120 yards per 2 oz; shown in color American Beauty.
H/8 (5mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
Standard stretchy pony tail holder, approx. 2″ diameter

Gauge: 4 st repeat = 1″

Finished size: 18″ circumference x 10″ tall

Instructions:

HAT:

Round 1: Join yarn with slst around pony tail holder, ch1, work all the following stitches around the ponytail holder: ch3 (counts as dc), 35dc, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 36 dcs

Round 2: ch3, 2dc-cluster in same st, ch3, 2dc-cluster in back bump of 3rd ch from hook. *skip next st, 3dc-cluster in next st, ch3, 2dc-cluster in back bump of 3rd ch from hook. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 18 horizontal clusters, 18 vertical clusters

Round 3: ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in same st, *ch1, skip next horizontal cluster, 3dc in next vertical cluster. Rep from * around, ch1, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 18 ch1 sps

Round 4: ch3, 2dc-tog over next 2 sts, ch3, 2dc-cluster back bump of 3rd ch from hook, *dc3tog over next 3 dcs, ch2, 2dc-cluster in back bump of 3rd ch from hook. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 18 horizontal clusters, 18 dc3togs

Rounds 5 – 11 : rep rounds 3 – 4 three times, then rep round 3 once more.

EDGING:

Round 12: ch1, sc in ch1 sp, *ch3, 2dc-cluster in side of sc just made, sc in next ch1 sp. Rep from * around, on last repeat replace sc with slst to first st at beg of round to join. — 18 clusters

Fasten off. Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and let dry.
