How to Cast on for a Knit Messy Bun Hat Free Pattern
by Kristin Omdahl

Messy bun hats are so wonderful for those of us with long hair! I especially love to add a pony tail holder to the opening to keep it stretchy and professional looking.

Scroll below to watch the tutorial video for getting started on this hat. Also, you could use ANY stitch pattern once you learn how to get the yarn cast on over the pony tail holder.

What you will need:
1 ball Be So Brave Yarn
US8 (5mm) knitting needles: dpns for cast on and optional circulars for after cast on (but you could use the dpns for entire hat if you preferred)
H/8 (5mm) crochet hook
1 standard pony tail holder, approx. 2″ diameter
Yarn needle
Scissors

Gauge: 4 sts = 1″ in stockinette stitch

Finished size: 18″ circumference

Instructions:
With crochet hook, single crochet 36 times around pony tail holder.
Round 1: slide loop on hook onto knitting needle (this counts as the first st), *yo, pick up and knit in next st. Rep from * around, yo. — 72 sts

Round 2: knit around

NOTE: if you are working in stockinette stitch, repeat round 2 until hat is desired length. If you are using any other stitch pattern, please make sure it is a multiple that evenly divides into 72.

Rounds 3 – 4: knit around

Rounds 5 – 8: purl around

Rounds 9 – 12: knit around

Rounds 13 – 16: pur around

Rep rounds 9 – 16 () more times.

BO loosely as follows: k1, *yo, k1. Pass yo and first st up and over 2nd st and off needle. Rep from * around. Fasten off.

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and let dry.
