Easiest Crochet Triangle Shawl for Beginners | Tidal Treasures Free Crochet Shawl Pattern

If you’ve ever wanted a crochet shawl that’s truly easy to make and beautiful enough to wear everywhere, this is it.

The Tidal Treasures Shawl is a lightweight, beginner-friendly crochet shawl inspired by soft sea glass colors, coastal textures, and tiny shoreline treasures collected over time.

Designed with a simple one-row repeat and relaxing rhythm, this is the kind of project you can pick up at the end of a long day and truly enjoy making. The open stitch pattern creates beautiful drape while gradient yarns, beads, and optional seaside-inspired charms add an elevated handmade feel.

Inspired by the quiet coastal atmosphere of The Sea Glass Journal, this shawl feels soft, airy, wearable, and just a little magical — like sunlight on water and treasures gathered along the shore.

Over the years, I’ve taught many absolute beginners how to crochet using simple increasing granny stitch patterns like this one.

I still remember sitting courtside at my son’s tennis lessons years ago while working on crochet designs. Another mom nearby became completely mesmerized watching my hands move with the yarn and hook. She asked if I would teach her to crochet, even though she had never held yarn before in her life.

That afternoon, I taught her the basics of the granny stitch.

The following week, she came back proudly carrying a granny square so large it could nearly cover a queen-sized bed.

That’s the magic of simple crochet patterns like this. Once the rhythm clicks, it becomes relaxing, meditative, and almost impossible to put down.

And that’s exactly the feeling I wanted to capture in the Tidal Treasures Shawl.

The Sea Glass Journal, a debut novel by Kristin OmdahlA Sea Glass–Inspired Free Crochet Pattern

I wanted this pattern to evoke storytelling and texture—something that feels like a walk along the shore.

Inspired by the quiet, coastal details in The Sea Glass Journal, the Tidal Treasures free crochet shawl pattern includes charm details along the edging—like tiny treasures collected over time.

Soft, layered, and a little unexpected… just like sea glass itself.

✨ Optional Upgrade: Adding Charms to Your Tidal Treasures Easiest Crochet Shawl

This is where the magic happens.

In the free crochet pattern and video I show you how to string the beads and charms onto the yarn to crochet them into the edging. But, if you wanted to add small charms along the edging after the fact, here is how to do that to give the shawl a subtle coastal feel—like little pieces of sea glass or treasures found along the shore.

How to Add Charms

  • Add charms in the center chain of the ch3 picot (see video for step by step tutorial).
  • Use jump rings to attach them evenly along the edge.
  • Space them in every picot or place them organically for a more natural look.

There’s no “perfect” placement—this is about personal expression.

You can choose:

  • Delicate and minimal
  • Playful and bold
  • Or skip them entirely for a classic look
  • Charms can all match or be assorted. There is no wrong combination!

👉 This step is completely optional—but it’s a beautiful way to make your shawl feel one-of-a-kind.

Styling Your Crochet Shawl

This lightweight, versatile shawl can be worn in so many ways:

  • Draped over the shoulders for a soft, elegant look
  • Wrapped like a scarf for everyday wear
  • Styled at the beach for a breezy, coastal vibe

The charm detail adds just enough texture and movement to catch the light—and a little attention.
