Apollonia Wrap or Throw Tapestry Crochet Motif Pattern

What you will need:

420 (630, 945, 1417) yd or 384 (576, 864, 1295m) #3 dk weight yarn per 6 colors each

G/7 (4.5mm) crochet hook

Yarn needle

Scissors

Note: Yardage is written  for wrap (small throw, medium throw, large throw).

Suggested #3 dk weight yarns:

Rainbow Cotton 8/8: 100% cotton, #3 dk weight yarn; 82 yds (72m) per 50g ball; suggested needle size US4-6. I think the drape and weight of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. This yarn retails for $2.60 and comes in 100 colors.

Cotton Bamboo Light Yarn: 60% bamboo / 40% cotton; 153 yds (140m) per 100 gm (3.5oz) ball. It comes in 29 colors. The suggested needle size is 3 – 4 mm (US 4 – US 6).  It is labeled a #3 DK weight yarn. This yarn retails for $2.25/ball or $8.99 per 4 balls.

Oh Baby organic cotton: #3 dk weight cotton yarn

Mandala Yarn: 100% acrylic #3 dk weight, gradient, self striping yarn.

Baby Bamboo Yarn: 50% bamboo / 50% acrylic; 120 yds (110m) per 50 gm (1.75oz) ball. It comes in 20 colors. The suggested needle size is 3 – 4 mm (US 4 – 6). It is labeled a #3 DK weight yarn. This yarn retails for $0.99/ball or $7.99 per 8 balls.

Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo DK Yarn: #3 dk weight 80% bamboo / 20% wool; 104 yds per 50 gm ball; needle size US6.  It comes in 13 colors retails for $6.75 per ball.

Finished Size:

Rectangular Wrap: 28 in (71cm) wide x 73 in (185cm) long, after blocking.

Small Throw: 40 in (101.6cm) wide x 73 in (185cm) long.

Medium Throw: 52 in (132cm) wide by 73 in (185cm) long.

Large Throw: 64 in (162.6cm)  wide x 73 in (185cm) long.

Gauge: 

Octagon motif is 11 in (28cm)  wide and square motif is 6 in (15cm) wide, after blocking. But gauge is not critical for this project.

Instructions:

Large Octagon Motif A:

Round 1: With color A, ch4, 7dc in 4th ch from hook, slst to top of 3rd ch at beg of round to join. — 8  dcs

Round 2: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in same st, 2dc in ea st around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 16 dcs

Round 3: Ch3 (counts as dc), with color B, 3fptr-cl in dc 2 rounds below, with color A, 1dc in next dc, *with color A, ch3, 1dc in next dc, with color B, 3fptr-cl in dc 2 rounds below, with color A, 1dc in next dc. Rep from * around, ch1, hdc to first st at sbeg of round to join. — 16 dcs and 8 ch3 sps in color A, 8 cl in color B

Round 4: With color A, ch1, sc in same sp, with color B, work (fpdc, ch3, fpdc) around next cl, *with color A sc in next ch3 sp, with color B, (fpdc, ch3, fpdc)  around next cl. Rep from * around, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. Fasten off color A. 

Round 5: Join color C with slst to first ch3 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), work 4 dc in same sp, with color B work fpdc2tog around post of next 2 fpdc sts, *with color C work 5dc in next ch3 sp, with color B work fpdc2tog around posts of next 2 fpdc sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join.

Round 6: With color C, slst into next st, ch1, 1sc in same st and ea of next 2 sts, with color B work (fpdc, ch3, fpdc) around post of next fpdc2tog sts, *with color C, skip 1dc, 1sc in ea of next 3 sts, with color B (fpdc, ch3, fpdc) around post of next fpdc2tog. Small Square Motif B (make 5):

With color A, ch5, slst to 5th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 2: With color B, slst to join in first dc, ch1, *sc in same st, 1sc in ea of next 2 sts, 3sc in next ch3 sp, *1sc in ea of next 3 sts, 3sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join.

Round 3: With color A, ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ea of next 3 sts, (2dc, ch3, 2dc)  in next sc, *1dc in ea of next 5 sts, (2dc, ch3, 2dc)  in  next st. Rep from * around, 1dc in last st, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join.

Round 4: With color B, ch1, sc in same st, 1sc in ea of next 5 sts, 3sc in next ch3 sp, *1sc in ea of next 9 sts, 3sc in  next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, 1sc in  ea of last 3 sts, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join.

Round 5: With color A, ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ea of next 6 sts, (2dc, ch3, 2dc) in next st, *1dc in ea of next 11 sts, (2dc, ch3, 2dc) in next st. Rep from * around, 1dc in ea of last 4 sts, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. Fasten off.

Make 5 small square motifs through round 5 in any combination of colors A, B, C, D, E.

Small Half Circle Motif C:

With color F ch5, slst to 5th ch from hook to form ring.

Row 1: Ch6 (counts as dc, ch3), dc in ring, (ch3, dc in ring)x2. — 3 ch3 sps

Row 2: Ch6 (counts as dc, ch3), *(3dc, ch3 picot, 3dc) in next ch3 sp, ch3. Rep from * two more times, dc in last st.

Row 3: Ch3 (counts as dc), 6dc in next ch3 sp, *ch5, sc in 3rd ch from hook, ch2, 6dc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * two more times, dc in last st.

Row 4: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ea of next 3 sts, ch3 picot, 1dc in ea of next 3 sts, *ch3, (sc, ch3, sc) in next picot, ch3, 1dc in ea of next 3 sts, ch3 picot, 1dc in ea of next 3 sts. Rep from * to last st: 1dc in last st.

Note: When joining half circle motif, replace the ch3 with ch3 join (ch1, slst, ch1). Evenly space the 9 joins from corner to corner of two joined octagon motifs, per schematic.

Assembly:

Joining Round for Large Octagon Motifs and Small Square Motifs: Join color F with slst in any st, ch1, sc in same st. Work 1sc in ea st around and 3sc in ea ch3 sp around. Slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. Slst to corresponding sc on adjacent motif after each sc on any joined side.

Note: When joining octagon motifs to each other, follow schematic as guide. One sided joins are joined from corner to corner. Two sided joins are joined from corner to corner, then skipping one side, one corner and one side, then joining from next corner to next corner.

Note: Small square motifs are joined on all four sides to octagon motifs, but skipping the corner joins on octagon motifs.

Edging: 

Round 1: Working around perimeter, join color F in any sc, ch6 (counts as dc, ch3), skip approx 1 in (2.5cm) of sts or end of rows, dc in next st, *ch3, skip approx 1 in (2.5cm) of sts or end of rows, dc in next st. Rep from  * around, replace last dc with slst to 3rd ch of beg ch6 to join.

Round 2: Slst into first ch3 sp, (ch3, 2dc, ch3 picot, 2dc, ch3, slst) in same ch3 sp, *in next ch3 sp work (slst, ch3, 2dc, ch3 picot, 2dc, ch3, slst) in next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, slst to first sl at beg of round to join.

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
