Margot Cardigan Crochet Pattern

What you will need:

  • 1000 (1100, 1210, 1330, 1464, 1610) yds or 914.1 (1005.5, 1106, 1215.7, 1338.2, 1472.2)m #3 dk weight yarn
  • K/10.5 (6.5mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Sample shown in size 34 in circumference.

Suggested #3 dk weight yarns:

Rainbow Cotton 8/8: 100% cotton, #3 dk weight yarn; 82 yds (72m) per 50g ball; suggested needle size US4-6. I think the drape and weight of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. This yarn retails for $2.60 and comes in 100 colors.

Cotton Bamboo Light Yarn: 60% bamboo / 40% cotton; 153 yds (140m) per 100 gm (3.5oz) ball. It comes in 29 colors. The suggested needle size is 3 – 4 mm (US 4 – US 6).  It is labeled a #3 DK weight yarn. This yarn retails for $2.25/ball or $8.99 per 4 balls.

Oh Baby organic cotton: #3 dk weight cotton yarn

Mandala Yarn: 100% acrylic #3 dk weight, gradient, self striping yarn.

Baby Bamboo Yarn: 50% bamboo / 50% acrylic; 120 yds (110m) per 50 gm (1.75oz) ball. It comes in 20 colors. The suggested needle size is 3 – 4 mm (US 4 – 6). It is labeled a #3 DK weight yarn. This yarn retails for $0.99/ball or $7.99 per 8 balls.

Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo DK Yarn: #3 dk weight 80% bamboo / 20% wool; 104 yds per 50 gm ball; needle size US6.  It comes in 13 colors retails for $6.75 per ball.

CotLin: #3 Dk weight 70% Tanguis Cotton, 30% Linen; 123 yds per 50gm skein; suggested needle size US 5 – 7. It comes in 44 colors and retails for $4.99 per skein.

Note: Sample shown is the longer length with side vents, and long sleeves. Adjusting the length of the body or sleeves can adjust your yardage requirements.

Finished Size:

34 (38, 42, 46, 50, 54) in or 86.4 (96.5, 106.7, 116.8, 127, 137.2)cm bust circumference.

Length: 18 in (45.7cm) or 24 in (61cm) from armhole opening.

Gauge: 

1 pattern repeat is 1.5 in (3.8cm) wide x 2 in (5cm) long (after blocking).

Upper Back:

Set up row: *Ch3, dc in 3rd ch from hook. Rep from * 19 (21, 23, 25, 27, 29) more times. — 20 (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) foundation ovals

Row 1: Ch5, sc in first oval, *ch3, sc in next oval. Rep from * across, ch2, dc in same last oval. — 19 (21, 23 25, 27, 29) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Row 2: Ch1, sc in same st, *5dc in next ch3 sp, sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * across, except on last repeat place last sc in ch2 sp. — 10 (11, 12, 13, 14, 15) 5dc shells

Row 3: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, *ch3, skip 1dc, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc. Rep from * across, ch2, skip last dc, dc in last sc. — 19 (21, 23, 25, 27, 29) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Row 4: Ch1, sc in first st, *ch3, sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * across, except on last repeat, sc in last ch2 sp. — 20 (22, 24 26, 28, 30) ch3 sps

Rep rows 1 – 4 until back is 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5) in or 20.3 (21.6, 22.9, 24.1, 25.4, 26.7)cm from beginning, ending on a row 2. Fasten off.

Upper Right Front:

Row 1: Join yarn with slst to first foundation oval at beg of set up row of upper back.  Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), sc in first oval, (ch3, sc in next foundation oval)x5 (5, 7, 7, 9, 9). Ch2, dc in same oval, leaving remaining row unworked. — 5 (5, 7, 7, 9, 9) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Rows 2 – 6: Rep rows 2 – 6  of upper back.

Row 7: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, *ch3, skip 1dc, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc. Rep from * across, ch3, skip 1 dc, (sc, ch2, dc) in last sc. — 6 (6, 8, 8, 10, 10) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Row 8: Rep row 4.

Row 9: Rep row 7. — 7 (7, 9, 9, 11, 11) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Row 10: Rep row 2.

Rows 11 – 14: Rep rows 7 – 10 once more. — 9 (9, 11, 11, 13, 13) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Rep rows 1 – 4 of back until upper right front is 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5) in or 20.3 (21.6, 22.9, 24.1, 25.4, 26.7)cm from beginning, ending on a row 2. Fasten off.

Upper Left Front:

Row 1: Join yarn with slst to 6th (6th, 8th, 8th, 10th, 10th) foundation oval from end, skipping 8 (6, 8, 6, 8, 6) ovals in the middle of set up row of upper back. Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), sc in same oval, (ch3, sc in next foundation oval)x5 (5, 7, 7, 9, 9), ch2, dc in same oval. — 5 (5, 7, 7, 9, 9) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Rows 2 – 6: Rep rows 2 – 6 of upper right front.

Row 7: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), sc in first sc, ch3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, *ch3, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc. Rep from * across, ch2, dc in last sc. — 6 (6, 8, 8, 10, 10) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Combining Fronts and Back:

Row 1: Working across upper left front, ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, *ch3, skip 3 sts, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc. Rep from * across upper left front, (ch3, dc in 3rd ch from hook)x3. These are the 3 foundation oval underarm stitches, leave remaining 2 upper left front sts unworked. Skip first sc, dc on upper back and sc in next dc, ch3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, *ch3, skip 3 sts, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc. Rep from * across upper back, (ch3, dc in 3rd ch from hook)x3. These are the 3 foundation oval underarm stitches, leave remaining 2 upper back sts unworked. Skip first sc, dc on upper right and sc in next dc, ch3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, *ch3, skip 3 sts, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc. Rep from across upper right front, ch2, dc in last sc. — 43 (45, 51, 53, 59, 61) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Note: On row 2, when working across the 3 foundation ovals from row 1, work (sc, ch3, sc) in first fo, ch3, sc in next fo, ch3, work (sc, ch3, sc) in next fo. See chart.

Row 2: Ch1, sc in first st, *ch3, sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * across, except on last repeat, sc in last ch2 sp. — 44 (50, 52, 58, 60, 66) ch3 sps

Row 3: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), sc in first ch3 sp, *ch3, sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * across, ch2, dc in last sc. — 43 (49, 51, 57, 59, 65) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Row 4: Ch1, sc in same st, *5dc in next ch3 sp, sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * across, except on last repeat place last sc in ch2 sp. — 22 (25, 26, 29, 30, 33) 5dc shells

Row 5: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, *ch3, skip 1dc, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc. Rep from * across, ch2, skip last dc, dc in last sc.

Rep rows 2 – 5 for 18 in or 45.7cm from underarms, ending on a row 4.

Note: For hip length, skip to lower body edging. For longer duster length, continue with separating lower body for side vents.

Separating Lower Body for Side Vents:

Lower Body Left Front:

Row 1: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, (ch3, skip 1dc, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 3 sts, sc in next dc)x5 (6, 6, 7, 7), ch2, dc in last sc. — 9 (11 ,11 ,13, 13) ch3 sps, 2 ch2 sps

Work in established pattern until lower body left front is 6 in or 15.2cm from beginning of split, ending on a row 4 (a shell row). 

Next row: Ch3 (counts as dc), work 2dc in same sc, *skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc, skip 2 dcs, 5dc in next sc. Rep from * across, end last rep with 3dc in last sc.

Next row: Ch1, sc in same st, *skip 2 sts, 5dc in next sc, skip 2 sts, sc in next dc. Rep from * across.

Rep last 2 rows once more. Fasten off.

Lower Body Back:

Row 1: Join with slst to same st as end of lower body left front, ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, (ch3, skip 1dc, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 3 sts, sc in next dc)x22 (24, 26, 28, 30), ch2, dc in next sc, leaving remaining sts unworked. — 22 (24, 26, 30, 32) ch3 sps

Work in established pattern until lower body back is 6 in or 15.2cm from beginning of split, ending on a row 4 (a shell row).  

Next row: Ch3 (counts as dc), work 2dc in same sc, *skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc, skip 2 dcs, 5dc in next sc. Rep from * across, end last rep with 3dc in last sc.

Row 2: Ch3 (counts as dc), work 2dc in same sc, *skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc, skip 2 dcs, 5dc in next sc. Rep from * across, end last rep with 3dc in last sc.

Row 3: Ch1, sc in same st, *skip 2 sts, 5dc in next sc, skip 2 sts, sc in next dc. Rep from * across. Fasten off.

Side Vent Edging: 

Note: You will be edging each side of each vent for a total of 4 edging sections.

Row 1: Working across end of rows, join with slst to first end of row, ch1, sc in same end of row, *skip 1 end of rows, 5dc in next end of row, skip 1 end of row, sc in next end of row. Rep from * across.

Row 2: Ch3 (counts as dc), work 2dc in same sc, *skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc, skip 2 dcs, 5dc in next sc. Rep from * across, end last rep with 3dc in last sc.

Row 3: Ch1, sc in same st, *skip 2 sts, 5dc in next sc, skip 2 sts, sc in next dc. Rep from * across. Fasten off.

Sleeves: 

Note: Sleeves are worked in the round from the underarm foundation ovals and continuing around the front and back end of rows of the upper body.

Round 1: Join with slst to first foundation oval, ch1, (sc, ch3, sc) in same foundation oval, ch3, skip 1 foundation oval, (sc, ch3, sc) in next foundation oval, *ch3, sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, replace last sc with slst to first sc at beg of round to join.

Round 2: Slst into first ch3 sp, ch1, sc in same sp, *ch3, sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, replace last sc with slst to first st at beg of round to join. 

Round 3: Rep round 2.

Round 4: Slst into first ch3 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), 4dc in same sp, *sc in next ch3 sp, 5dc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join.

Round 5: Slst into next dc, ch1, sc in same st. *Ch3, skip 1dc, sc in next dc, ch3, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc. Rep from * around, except on last repeat replace sc with slst to first sc at beg of round to join.

Rep rounds 2 – 5 until sleeve is 3 in or 7cm shorter than desired length, making sure to end on a round 4.

Sleeve Edging:

Round 1: Slst in next st, ch1, sc in next st, *skip 2 sts, 5dc in next sc, skip 2 sts, sc in next st. Rep from * around, except replace last sc with slst to first st at beg of round to join.

Round 2: Slst in ea of next 2 sts, ch1, sc in next st, *skip 2 sts, 5dc in next sc, skip 2 sts, sc in next st. Rep from * around, except replace last sc with slst to first st at beg of round to join.

Rounds 3 – 5: Rep round 2. Fasten off.

Belt:

Row 1: *Ch3, dc in 3rd ch from hook. Rep from * for desired length, or approximately double waist measurement.

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.

    Thank you for the free pattern! LOVE the behind-the-scenes video. We miss seeing you every day. I think about how hard that must have been to be routinely on daily, exposing your whole life to the world. How courageous! Such an accomplishment! I also wanted to say that your bags you had hanging in your office in the background of this video….how I love them. I use mine EVERY day! Every single one of them are in use; and I could use more! BTW, do you happen to have the large laundry bags to sell? I could use some and think of them & how I wish I had ordered some, every time I do my laundry!
