An unstructured cardi wrap crochet vest is a wonderful project to take your crochet to the next level. If you can make a rectangular wrap but are intimidated by structured garments, it is the perfect transition project. There are a variety of ways you can style this vest. It can be worn to look loose and unstructured as-is. But with the simple addition of ties, a belt or button(s), you can transform it into an accessory that looks custom fit! This is one of those pieces that you can slip on over just about anything. Dress it up or down, it is a staple for any wardrobe.

What you will need:

  • 1264 yds (1156m) #2 sport weight yarn
  • G/6 (4mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Finished Size:

28 in (71.1cm) wide x 72 in  (183cm) long.

Gauge:

Each pattern repeat is 4 in (10cm) wide after blocking.

Stitch Guide:

Chain (ch), slip stitch (slst), double crochet (dc), and foundation oval.

Instructions:

First Half of Vest:

Foundation ovals (multiple of 5 + 2)

Set up row: *Ch4, dc in 4th ch from hook. Rep from * 36 more times. — 37 foundation ovals

Row 1: Slst into first foundation oval, ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in same sp, ch3, 3dc in next foundation oval. *Ch4, dc in next oval, (ch2, dc in next oval)x2, ch4, 3dc in next oval, ch3, 3dc in next oval. Rep from * across. — 8 ch3 sps

Row 2: Slst across into first ch3 sp, ch4 (counts as dc, ch1), [(dc, ch1)x4, dc] in same sp, *ch2, skip 3 dcs, dc in next dc, (ch2, dc in next dc)x2, ch2, skip 3 dcs, [(dc, ch1)x5, dc] in next ch3 sp. Rep from * across.

Row 3: Slst into first ch1 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in same sp, (3dc in next ch1 sp)x4, *skip next dc, dc in next dc, (ch2, dc in next dc)x2, skip next dc, (3dc in next ch1 sp)x5. Rep from * across. 

Row 4: Slst across first 6 dcs and into space before next dc, ch3 (counts as dc), work 2dc in same sp, ch3, skip 3 dcs, 3dc in space before next dc. *Ch4, skip 6 dcs, dc in next dc, (ch2, dc in next dc)x2, ch4, skip 6 dcs, 3dc in space before next dc, ch3, skip 3 dcs, 3dc in space before next dc. Rep from * across.

Row 5: Rep row 2

Row 6: Rep row 3

Rows 7 – 14: Rep rows 4 – 6 two more times, then rows 4 – 5 once more.

First armhole:

Row 15: Slst into first ch1 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in same sp, (3dc in next ch1 sp)x4, *skip next dc, dc in next dc, (ch2, dc in next dc)x2, skip next dc, (3dc in next ch1 sp)x5**. Skip next dc, dc in next dc, (ch2, dc in next dc)x2, (ch4, dc in 4th ch from hook)x12 (12 foundation ovals completed), skip next  2.5 repeats of pattern [6dc shell, ch2, dc)x3 = 1 repeat]. So you ship [6dc shell, 3 singular dcs] two times, then skip 1 6dc shell once more. Rep in established pattern from * to ** to end.

Row 16: Slst across first 6 dcs and into space before next dc, ch3 (counts as dc), work 2dc in same sp, ch3, skip 3 dcs, 3dc in space before next dc. *Ch4, skip 6 dcs, dc in next dc, (ch2, dc in next dc)x2, ch4, skip 6 dcs, 3dc in space before next dc, ch3, skip 3 dcs, 3dc in space before next dc**. Rows 19 – 57: Rep rows 4 – 6 thirteen more times. Fasten off.

Second half of vest:

Working in opposite side of foundation ovals and beginning on the same side of foundation ovals as row 1 of opposite side, rep rows 1 – 57 of first half of vest. Fasten off.

Sleeves (make 2):

Set up round: *Ch4, dc in 4th ch from hook. Rep from * 24 more times, slst to first ch at beg of round to join. — 25 foundation ovals

Round 1: Slst into first foundation oval, ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in same oval, ch3, 3dc in next oval, ch4, dc in next oval, (ch2, dc in next oval)x2, *ch4, 3dc in next oval, ch3, 3dc in next oval, ch4, dc in next oval, (ch2, dc in next oval)x2. Rep from * around, ch4, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join.  — 5 ch3 sps

Round 2: Slst across and into first ch3 sp, ch4 (counts as dc ch1), [(dc, ch1)x4, dc] in same sp, *ch2, skip 3 dcs, dc in next dc, (ch2, dc in next dc)x2, ch2, skip 3 dcs, [(dc, ch1)x5, dc] in next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, ch2, slst to 3rd ch of beg ch4 to join. — 5 shells

Round 3: Slst into first ch1 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in same sp, (3dc in next ch1 sp)x4, *skip next dc, dc in next dc, (ch2, dc in next dc)x2, (3dc in next ch1 sp)x5. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join.

Round 4: Slst across first 6 dcs and into space before next dc, ch3 (counts as dc), work 2dc in same sp, ch3, skip 3 dcs, 3dc in space before next dc. *Ch4, skip 6 dcs, dc in next dc, (ch2, dc in next dc)x2, ch4, skip 6 dcs, 3dc in space before next dc, ch3, skip 3 dcs, 3dc in space before next dc. Rep from * around, ch4, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join.

Round 5: Rep round 2.

Round 6: Rep round 3.

Rounds 7 – 33: Rep rounds 4 – 6 nine more times, fasten off.

Optional Sleeve Ties (make 2):

Ch150, fasten off.

Note: Attach sleeve at the set up round edge to the armhole opening. If you are permanently attaching sleeves to the vest, sew them into the armhole openings. If you are temporarily attaching sleeves to the vest, use the ties to weave back and forth into the armhole opening and the sleeve to secure in place.

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
