This is a very quick, one-ball project. It is a great project for a beginner because the stitch pattern is easy to memorize. Easy, fast, and fun for a beginner project plus it is great for a last minute gift!

What you will need:

  • 145 yds (132m) #5 bulky weight yarn
  • L/11 (8mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Be So Easy Yarn; 145 yds (132m) per 3.5oz (100gm); 100% milk cotton, #5 bulky weight yarn; color Raisin, 1 ball.

Finished Size:

30 in (76.2cm) circumference x 11 in (27.9cm) tall.

Gauge: 

9 sts / 4 rounds in pattern = 4 in (10cm) after blocking

Stitch Guide: 

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc) and slip stitch (slst).

 

Chain 3 Picot (ch3 picot): Ch3, sc in 3rd ch from hook.

Instructions:

Loosely ch63, slst to join in the round.

Round 1: Ch3 (counts as dc), work (dc, ch1, 2dc) in same first ch, *ch3, skip 2 chs, sc in next ch, ch5, skip 2 chs, sc in next ch, ch3, skip 2 chs, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch. Rep from * six more times, but instead of joining round, pivot, and work into free loops of beg ch. Rep from * 7 more times, join with slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 14 ch1 sps

Note: Round 1 is worked in a figure 8 around beginning chain. The chain becomes the center of the cowl and the rounds grow outward from there. The final round will be the edging for both the top and bottom edge simultaneously. 

Round 2: Slst into first ch1 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), (1dc, ch1, 2dc) in same ch1 sp, *ch5, sc in next ch5 sp, ch5, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp. Rep from * around, ch5, sc in next ch5 sp, ch5, slst to 3rd ch of beg ch3 to join. — 14 ch1 sps

Round 3: Slst into first ch1 sp, (ch3 (counts as dc), (1dc, ch1, 2dc) in same ch1 sp, *ch3, sc in next ch5 sp, ch5, sc in next ch5 sp, ch3, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp. Rep from * around, ch3, sc in next ch5 sp, ch5, sc in next ch5 sp, ch3, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 14 ch1 sps

Round 4: Rep round 2.

Round 5: Slst into first ch1 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), (1dc, ch3 picot, 2dc) in same ch1 sp, *3sc in next ch5 sp, ch3 picot, 3sc in next ch5 sp, (2dc, ch3 picot, 2dc) in next ch1 sp. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. Fasten off. — 28 ch3 picots

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
