Yuki Crochet Motif Yoke on Fabric T-shirt Upcycle Project

Yuki Crochet Motif Yoke on Fabric T-shirt Upcycle Project by Kristin Omdahl

Crochet is such a wonderful way to upcycle your wardrobe and bring new life and love to old clothing. You can also embellish new clothing this way, too, for one-of-a-kind outfits.

What you will need:

250 yds (m) #3 dk weight yarn, approx 85 yds each (78m) of 3 colors
E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
Store-bought t-shirt
Fabric scissors
Needle & thread

Gauge: My motifs are 3 in (7.6cm) square

Finished sizes: Depending on the size of your motifs and the size of the shirt you are embellishing, this will vary.

You want to make enough square motifs to fit the opening of your t-shirt. Then make 4 additional triangle motifs to create the corner increases.

I made 3 square motifs wide across the front and back, 1 square motif wide for each sleeve, and 4 triangle motifs – one for each of the four raglan corners.

Instructions:

Triangle motif (make 4):

With color A, ch4, slst to 4th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: Ch3 (counts as dc), 11dc in ring, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join, fasten off. — 12 dcs

Round 2: With color B, slst to join in any dc on round 1, ch3, dc3tog in same st and in next st (1 leg in first st, 2 legs in second st), *ch5, dc4tog over next 2 dcs (2 legs in ea of next 2 dcs), ch3, dc4tog over next 2 dcs. Rep from * around, ch5, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join, fasten off. — 3 ch3 sps, 3 ch5 sps

Round 3: With color C, slst to join in any ch3 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in same sp, (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in next ch5 sp, *3dc in next ch3 sp, (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in next ch5 sp. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. Fasten off. — 3 ch3 sps

Square motif (make as many as you need for the size of shirt you are covering):

With color A, ch5, slst to 5th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: Ch3 (counts as dc), 15 dc in ring, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join, fasten off. — 16 dcs

Round 2: With color B, slst to join in any dc on round 1, ch3, dc3tog in same st and in next st (1 leg in first st, 2 legs in second st), *ch5, dc4tog over next 2 dcs, (2 legs in ea of next 2 dcs, ch3, dc4tog over next 2 dcs. Rep from * around, ch5, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join, fasten off. 4 ch3 sps, 4 ch5 sps

Fasten off. — 4 ch3 sps

When joining motifs, on last round of motifs, replace ch3 with ch3 joins (ch1, slst to adjacent ch3 sp, ch1) and slst between each set of 3dc along sides being joined. See second chart for slst placement. And watch supplemental video tutorial for more guidance. The last motif will be joined on two opposing sides to join all motifs into a yoke.

Assembly:

Place motif yoke over t-shirt and pin in place. Using a steamer or steam iron, make sure the motifs are relaxed and the tshirt is smooth without wrinkles. Sew motif yoke to tshirt with needle and thread. Turn shirt inside out and cut the excess t-shirt material out from underneath the motifs. Note: Store bought machine knit t-shirt fabric will not unravel or fray after cutting.

  1. Anna says:

I love the pattern but could you please develop a sleeve pattern to go on existing t-shirts I tried several but they don’t quite live up to my expectations and I know that you could do this. I am thin but I inherited the flabby batwing arms from my mother so I’m trying to hide this anything you could provide us with would be much appreciated thank you
