Star Fringe Crochet Shawl FREE Pattern

This simple, elegant lace shawl is enhanced by the addition of a row of star-shaped motifs along the lower edge. They add textured interest and fringe-like flare without the tangles! Not only are the motifs joined as you go, they also join to the existing edge of the shawl at the same time. Wear this shawl with a simple dress and instantly you’ll have an enviable outfit.

MATERIALS:
(2) hanks Be So Sporty Yarn; 100% bamboo, sport weight yarn; 325 yards per 4oz hank. ALWAYS FREE Winding!
G/6 (4 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends; split ring stitch markers (optional).

GAUGE:
1 motif = 4” (10 cm) wide from side to side; 5” (12.5 cm) from point to point. 1 repeat of lace stitch pattern, 3 X-sts = 4” (10 cm); 4 rows = 3” (7.5 cm), after blocking.

FINISHED SIZE:
68” wide x 28” long (173 x 71 cm).

NOTE: All X-sts use a multiple of 5 stitches on the previous row. Corner X-sts share the same st location as the lower left leg of the previous X-st and lower right leg of the next X-st. Beginning X-sts are worked in the first st, of the row and share that st with the right leg of the next X-st. End X-st is worked in the last st of the row and share that st with the left leg of the previous X-st (see Stitch Diagram B).

SPECIAL STITCHES:
Beg X stitch: ch4 (counts as tr) [lower right leg of X st], skip next 3 sts, yo twice, insert hook in next stitchand pull up a loop. (yo, pull through 2 loops)x3 [lower left leg of X st]. Ch7 (counts as tr, ch3) [upper right leg of X st], yo twice, insert hook into top horizontal thread of both lower legs of X and pull up a loop. (yo, pull through 2 loops)x3 [upper left leg of X st].

X stitch: yo 5 times, insert hook in next stitch and pull up a loop. (yo, pull through 2 loops)x2 [lower rightleg of X st]. There are still 5 loops on hook. Skip 3 sts, yo twice, insert hook in next stitch and pull up a loop. (yo, pull through 2 loops)x2,  [lower left leg of X st], yo, pull through 3 loops [bottom legs are joined]. There are still 4 loops on hook. (yo, pull through 2 loops)x3 [upper right leg of X st]. Ch3, yo twice, insert hook through top horizontal thread of both lower tr legs of X and pull up a loop. (yo, pull through 2 loops)x3 [upper left leg of X st].

Corner X stitch: yo 5 times, insert hook in same st as last lower leg of prev X st, (yo, pull through 2 loops) x3. There are still 4 loops on hook. Yo twice, insert hook in next st and pull up a loop. (yo, pull through 2loops)x3. There are still 4 loops on hook. (yo, pull through 2 loops)x3. Ch8, yo twice, insert hook through top horizontal thread of both lower tr legs of X and pull up a loop. (yo, pull through 2 loops)x3.

INSTRUCTIONS:
SHAWL:
Row 1: Ch 16, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across. — 15 sc.

Row 2: Beg X-st in first st, *X-st starting in same st as last X-st, corner X-st. Rep from * once, X-st starting in same st as last X-st, End X-st in last st, turn. — 7 X-sts.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, *3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in ea of next 2 sts. Rep from * 5 times, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in 4th ch of turning ch, turn. — 35 sc.

Row 4: Beg-X-st in first st, *3 X-sts (starting first X-st in same st as last X-st), corner X-st (place marker in top left leg of X-st), X-st, corner X-st, 3 X-sts, End X-st in last sc, turn. — 11 X-sts. Move marker up as work progresses.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first st, *3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in ea of next 2 sts. Rep from * across to last ch-3 sp, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in 4th ch of turning ch, turn. — 55 sc.

Row 6: Beg-X-st in first st, *X-st (starting first X-st in same st as last X-st), work X-sts across to next marked st, corner X-st, X-st, corner X-st, work X-sts across, End X-st in last sc, turn. — 15 X-sts.

Rows 7–25: Rep Rows 5–6 (9 times). — 51 X-sts at end of last row; then rep Row 5 once. — 255 sc.

Do not fasten off.

EDGING:
NOTE: 1 row of motifs is worked along the lower “V” edge of the shawl, joining the motifs to each other as you go, while at the same time joining to Row 25 of the shawl.

Motif 1:
Rnd 1: Ch 9 + 5 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 25, sl st in 9th ch from hook to form loop, *ch 9, sl st in 9th ch from hook to form loop. Rep from * 4 times. Sl st in in sl st at base of first loop, ch 4, sl st in 5th ch of beg ch to form 6th ch-9 loop.

Note: Motif should look like a flower with 6 ch-9 petals.

Rnd 2: Sl st in ea of next 3 beg chs (counts as dc), 3 dc in same sp, [ch 5, 4 dc in next ch-9 sp] 5 times, ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch (counts as ch-5).

Rnd 3: Sl st in ea of next 3 chs (counts as dc), (ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in first ch-5 sp, *ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc in sp before next st, ch 2, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-5 sp, ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc in sp before next st, ch 2, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-5 sp. *Sk next 9 sts in Row 25 of Shawl Body, place marker in next st*.
